Netflix’s The Sandman Series: What to Know Before Watching

Plot: When the Sandman, aka Dream, the cosmic being who controls all dreams, is captured and held prisoner for more than a century, he must journey across different worlds and timelines to fix the chaos his absence has caused.

Who is the Sandman?

The Sandman is a member of The Endless – a very powerful family of seven cosmic beings who represent different abstract entities they are named after:

Dream, Death, Destiny, Despair, Desire, Delirium and Destruction.

They are called the endless because all these abstract entities are in fact, endless. As long as there is life – be it human, godly, cosmic, angelic, or demonic, these beings will exist.

They are as old as time itself and since they are concepts, they must always exist. If one of the Endless is destroyed then he/she will be replaced by another aspect of their role.

How powerful are The Endless?

They are extremely powerful beings. In the DC Universe, the only beings more powerful than them are The Presence (God in DC), Michael, Lucifer, Ellaine Bolloc, and other Archangels.

Some members of the Endless also have different personifications. For instance, to people powered by the Speed Force like The Flash family and the New Gods like Darkseid, the Black Racer is their personification of Death. Same with Nekron and The Green Lanterns, etc.

Who are the main characters in the series?

The main characters in the series are the members of The Endless, including Morpheus (Dream), Lucifer (and other characters from the Lucifer TV show like Mazikeen, Cain and Abel), Corinthian, and humans like Roderick (who summoned the Dream) and Johanna Constantine (an ancestor of John Constantine).

P.S: While I loved Tom Elis’ portrayal of Lucifer, The Sandman show will be a little more true to Lucifer, and other characters from its TV show’s, comic-book origin.

Powers and abilities

The powers and abilities of Dream and the members of The Endless are vast, cosmic, and multiversal.

They are all nigh-omnipotent beings with practically limitless powers especially when they are in their respective domains.

They also don’t like staying in each other’s domains too long. It’s uncomfortable and their powers aren’t as strong in another person’s domain.

Where is Sandman showing?

The Sandman stars Tom Sturridge, Jenna Coleman, Gwendoline Christie, Charles Dance, Asim Chaudhry, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, and Boyd Holbrook, amongst others.

The first season is an adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s DC Vertigo comic books and is available to stream on Netflix from August 8th
