Chris Hemsworth’s first outing as Thor would was a rousing success which went on to gross an impressive $449 million worldwide on a budget of $150 million, and his reprise for the role of the god of thunder in Thor: The Dark World was an even bigger hit, earning over $644 million worldwide on an only slightly higher budget of $170 million. Hemsworth would of course also play a large part in the success of both The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron.
With all that in mind, one would assume that Hemsworth’s place within the ever-expanding MCU is quite secure at this point, and the part of Thor will be his until he no longer wishes to continue working with Marvel Studios. Oddly enough though, it seems that Hemsworth himself made no such assumptions, revealing in a new interview with EW that he initially thought his exclusion from Captain America: Civil War meant that he was being fired
“I was like, ‘What? Are we being fired?’ Marvel quickly reassured us, ‘No you guys have got your own journey going on, and in order for that to work you can’t be a part of this one.’ Look, it turned out just perfect because we got to do a whole different kind of thing we wouldn’t have able to do otherwise.”
That separate journey for Thor and Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) will of course take place in this fall’s MCU entry Thor: Ragnarok, Hemsworth’s third solo adventure as the Asgardian warrior. Well, solo in the sense that Thor’s name is in the title, and he’s the clear focus of the plot. The days of one-hero solo movies seem to be largely behind the MCU at this juncture.
