Wonder Woman: Origin Story May Break Yet Another Box Office Record

Wonder Woman is more than just a superhero movie and an origin story at this point. With the movie about the Amazonian already tagged the best movie in the DC Extended Universe, it’s no surprise that Wonder Woman has grossed the mind-blowing figures it has at the box office already.

But it doesn’t end there for the lasso of truth wielding hero. Her movie is well on it’s way to breaking the record for the highest-grossing superhero origin movie of all time.
To accomplish the feat, Wonder Woman only has to pass Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man — which currently stands at $821 million worldwide, compared to Wonder Woman‘s $745 million.
Wonder Woman earned $28 million at the domestic box office last week, down about 25% from the previous weekend; that gives a solid chance at another $30 million or more before the film exits its North American theatrical run, in addition to whatever it brings in overseas.
That is still only $780 million or so,  but there is another big wrinkle, which is that Wonder Woman does not open in Japan until August.
Man of Steel earned $9 million in Japan, and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice earned $19 million. Suicide Squad made just under $16 million. Based on those numbers, it seems likely that if the film opens in Japan with around $800 million, it could very well top Spider-Man.
Wonder Woman has already passed the worldwide box office total of Man of Steel ($668 million), but Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice remains the highest-grossing film in the shared universe worldwide ($873.3 million) and internationally ($543.2). Suicide Squad is still the second highest performer outside of the United States ($745.6 million worldwide, $420.5 international).
The film is still breaking records; it’s on a pace to become one of the highest-grossing solo superhero movies (the highest-grossing in some international territories) and potentially to overtake Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 as the top superhero movie of the year so far.
Wonder Woman has received nearly universal critical approval. The film broke the records for biggest domestic opening for a female director and the biggest opening for a female-led comic book film with $103.3 million. It is currently the fifth highest-grossing film of 2017 worldwide and is closing in on Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales for fourth place.
Wonder Woman is showing in theates nationwide.
