Thor: Ragnarok Trailer Breaks A Record In 24 Hours

Marvel kicked off this week with a bang yesterday by dropping the first Thor: Ragnarok trailer bright and early for all to enjoy. With Led Zepplin’s “Immigrant Song” as its song of choice, the preview proved that the God of Thunder’s third movie will look and feel quite different compared to his previous solo outings. By now most of you have watched probably watched the trailer at least once, if not rocked out to it several times, and these collective views have resulted in a major milestone. The Thor: Ragnarok trailer is now not only the most viewed Marvel trailer of all time, but the most viewed one across all of Disney’s brands.

In its first 24 hours online, as reported by THR, the Thor: Ragnarok trailer wracked up more than 136 million views online, surpassing the Beauty and the Beast trailer’s 127.6 million views. Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Captain America: Civil War also once held that record with 112 million and 94 million views, respectively. While this is an impressive accomplishment for Marvel, Disney Studios and every other corner of that media empire, Thor: Ragnarok wasn’t able to become the most-viewed trailer of all time within a day’s time. That honor still belongs to the IT trailer, which debuted two weeks ago and collected 197 million views. The Fate of the Furious‘ trailer comes in second place with 139 million views.
Being part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is already guarantees that the Thor: Ragnarok trailer was going to be looked at by a lot of eyes, but it also helped that were plenty of great moments sprinkled in, from Cate Blanchett’s Hela destroying Mjolnir to Asgard seemingly being destroyed to Thor cheering upon seeing The Hulk in Grandmaster’s arena, only to discover that his fellow Avenger still wants to battle. With content like that, word of mouth surely played a big role in that view count being so high.
This Thor: Ragnarok trailer can enjoy its rightly earned prestige for now, but I suspect it won’t hold these particular records for years to come. Where Marvel is concerned, there’s a good chance that Avengers: Infinity War will shatter everything that’s come before and then some since it’s being set up as the biggest Marvel movie yet. Who knows, maybe even the first Black Panther trailer will surpass Thor: Ragnarok‘s total views. As for the Disney family as a whole, Thor: Ragnarok may not even go a full week as the most viewed trailer, as the first preview for Star Wars: The Last Jedi is expected to drop this Friday. MCU movies are popular, but a Star Wars movie that’s part of the main saga? That’s at the top of the proverbial food chain.
In any case, you can look forward to Thor: Ragnarok storming into theatres on November 3.
