PLOT – Ever since hulking lawman Hobbs (Johnson), a loyal agent of America’s Diplomatic Security Service, and lawless outcast Shaw (Statham), a former British military elite operative, first faced off in 2015’s Furious 7, the duo have swapped smack talk and body blows as they’ve tried to take each other down. But when cyber-genetically enhanced anarchist Brixton (Idris Elba) gains control of an insidious bio-threat that could alter humanity forever — and bests a brilliant and fearless rogue MI6 agent (The Crown’s Vanessa Kirby), who just happens to be Shaw’s sister — these two sworn enemies will have to partner up to bring down the only guy who might be badder than themselves.
REVIEW
I was so excited when the movie was announced because who wouldn’t want to see Jason Statham and Dwayne Johnson in the same movie against Idris Elba no less. That’s like an action & testosterone mini-heaven.
The movie started off with events leading up to their next meeting after the end of Fate of The Furious, and also saw the introduction of Shaw’s younger sister and possible love interest for Hobbs, who was on the run from intelligence agencies nationwide after getting framed for killing all her agents and stealing a deadly virus.
The stunts were good too and they pulled off as much as they could with the budget they had, but in all honesty, the movie was very regular. There wasn’t anything extra in it, no ‘wow’ feeling after, just your normal action movie. The only selling point to the movie is the comedy in it. The banter, trolling, back and forth cussing between Hobbs and Shaw was what made the movie better and gave it substance.
If you remove the comedy, Hobbs and Shaw is an average movie because everything that happens in the movie are things that we have seen before in many Jason Statham movies especially the Transporter Trilogy, The Expendables, The Mechanic, and Fast and Furious 7&8. You won’t miss anything if you don’t watch it, and once the movie was over, I forgot all about Idris Elba’s character, Brixton, who was the antagonist in the movie. Making him a forgettable villain is quite unforgivable.
One major connect with the bigger franchise is still having the family tag. At the end of the day, it is still all about Family, which is a heart-warming thing.
All in all, it was an unworthy addition to the Fast and Furious franchise and Tokyo Drift was a better spin-off than this movie.
