Gal Gadot was born for the role of Diana, princess of Themyscira, she just didn’t know it. That’s what the actress revealed on the set of Wonder Woman last year while chatting with journalists.
To see Gadot in person in full Wonder Woman costume is to live in the DC Universe. Even more than when you see Batman or Superman running around, there’s a power, a presence, a beauty, and a grace that is unique to Wonder Woman – and Gadot embodies it all perfectly.
Doing the most mundane of tasks, every eye on the set was locked to her. So the fact that she feels now like Wonder Woman is the role she’s always been trying to get to makes perfect sense.
“The best part… somehow I think that I always wished to play Wonder Woman without even knowing it myself,” Gadot told the assembled press. “Eight years ago when I just became an actress I used to travel to Los Angeles and take general meetings with different producers, different writers, directors, and they kept on asking me the same question over and over again: ‘What’s your dream role?’ And I kept on saying I’m open to all genres as long as the story is interesting enough, but if you’re really asking what would I like to do is show the stronger side of women because I feel that there’s not enough stories being told about strong women, an independent woman, and little did I know that five years later I land the part.”
Gadot is quick to acknowledge the challenges of playing a role like Wonder Woman, one she had to shoot for almost a year and a half straight, going directly from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice to Wonder Woman to Justice League with very short breaks in-between, but she wouldn’t trade it for anything.
“We’re going through some very, very intensive weeks. [Directory] Patty [Jenkins] was just saying we’re really testing to see if I’m the true, real Wonder Woman. They decided to shoot the movie in London, which is fantastic… in the winter which is less amazing,” she said with a laugh.
Even the challenges are part of the fun of playing the character for Gadot, ultimately.
“The physicality of it is really challenging, but I like it, I enjoy it,” the actress said. “It makes me happy after I do it right… But I really love Diana, I love everything about her. I love the story: she has a heart of a human being, powers of a goddess and a very wise brain so it is everything. I love her.”
Wonder Woman, directed by Patty Jenkins and starring Gal Gadot as Diana, Princess of Themyscira, is in post-production now for a June 2, 2017, release.
