The upcoming Power Rangers movie is another Morphin reboot!
Dacre Montgomery, who played Red Ranger in 2017’s Power Rangers, has said that the movie will not get a sequel.
Lionsgate and Hasbro’s joint project, Power Rangers, was released with the hopes of using the reboot to start a mega-franchise that was reported to span seven movies. However, the reboot didn’t meet up to expectations and wound up only grossing $142 million on a reported $100M budget.
Regardless, core fans of the Power Rangers kept clamouring for a sequel (especially after seeing the after-credit scene that showed the appearance of the Green Ranger).
Unfortunately Power Rangers fans, Dacre Montgomery, who played the Red Ranger in the film and recently starred as Billy on Stranger Things, recently took part in a Reddit AMA (via Power Rangers Now) and revealed the news. In response to a question about the potential of Power Rangers 2 happening, Montgomery replied, “I think there is a movie in the works but it’s not with me and the cast. So yes but not with us.”

Even though the first movie didn’t do so well in the box-office, a sequel could have helped save the franchise, now that most of the cast and crew are more prominent than they were when they did the first movie. Montgomery himself is a more recognizable face now thanks to Stranger Things, while Naomi Scott recently co-starred in Disney’s live-action Aladdin and is also set to lead Charlie’s Angels this fall. Ludi Lin could star in Marvel’s Shang-Chi, Becky G is a budding international pop star, and RJ Cyler built up his filmography with roles in Black Lightning and Swamp Thing.
It’s sad that we may not be getting the sequel we were expecting, but here’s hoping that the upcoming movie will find a way to tie into the bigger story to enable the Montgomery and his fellow rangers return for the third movie.
