Review

The Good is a movie that gave me a lot of mixed reactions, to be honest. It was a serious case of ‘for every step forward it took, there were three giant steps backwards.’

The cast of the movie really put up top-notch performances. When the likes of Sola Sobowale is in the movie, you’d already know what to expect from her. And the remaining cast did well to put up a performance that rivalled her level of perfection. The directing, cinematography, and lighting were also good, and the musical score had this classic Nollywood home video feel to it, that I found myself experiencing a wave of nostalgia that had me smiling from ear-to-ear.

Sadly, the movie started on a high and then went on a series of fast-paced freefalls and elevations, you’d think it was a series of unending waves at sea. The story idea was good, but the story itself was executed poorly. It was rushed to accommodate as many things possible and still managed to lack enough content, leaving you with a very basic outcome. The saddest part is, it is until the last scene of the movie that you’d finally understand why all that happened, happened. Yet it wouldn’t make up for everything that happened since the beginning of the movie, being all over the place and still ending up nowhere.

Also, after every scene in the movie, there was a timelapse of some sort that had nothing to do with moving the plot forward. And the fact that it was after every single scene in the movie only made it worse.

Overall, if you are a fan of romance and drama, and always wondered what it would be like watching a home video Nollywood movie at the cinemas, then The Good movie is one for you. If, however, you are expecting a movie that measures up to par with the best Nigerian movies you have watched, then The Good is definitely not for you.
