The Flash has brought a wide variety of superpowered characters to the small screen over its three seasons so far, ranging from friendly metahumans with fantastic powers to bad guys with devastating abilities. Now, we know of a new person with powers who will debut in Season 4, and she won’t be one of the good guys. The DC Comics villainess known as Hazard will be played by Sugar Lyn Beard when The Flash returns in the fall.
Sugar Lyn Beard is probably best known for her role as Jeanie Stangle in the 2016 film Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, although she has appeared on the small screen in shows like You’re The Worst, The Mindy Project, and Drunk History. On The Flash, Beard will portray Rebecca Sharpe, a.k.a Hazard. Rebecca is going through life convinced that she’s cursed due to her constant bad luck. Then, a freak accident occurs and her fortunes change. With her luck suddenly working in her favor, she becomes a threat to Central City and Team Flash. Variety reports that the character will appear in the third episode of The Flash Season 4.
The Flash Will Have No Speedster Villain In Season 4
Hazard is a DC Comics villainess, but even the most diehard DC fans shouldn’t be blamed if they don’t know who she is. She’s not exactly the most notorious baddie to ever menace the heroes of the DC universe, and she’s doesn’t have arch-nemesis status to any of the big name heroes. That said, she has a truly bizarre set of powers that — if directly adapted to The Flash — should make for an entertaining conflict with the good guys.
The Hazard of DC lore debuted in 1987 as a member of the Injustice Society who swore to avenge the death of her criminal grandfather, known as the Gambler. Her quest for vengeance put her at odds with the heroes of the Justice Society of America and Infinity Inc. She possesses psionic abilities that she uses on her enemies, choosing between good fortune and “accidents” for given targets. She uses a pair of special dice when making her decisions on how to proceed in certain situations.
Hazard’s skills of psychic manipulation make her a formidable foe whenever she appears in the comics, although she has often shown an unwillingness to kill her enemies. If the Flash version of Hazard has the same qualms about killing, she could become more of a wacky Villain of the Week than a terrifying baddie who needs to be put down as quickly as possible. Considering that she’ll appear in the third episode, my money is on hijinks rather than harrowing crises. Team Flash will likely need some time to recover from Barry’s inevitable return from the Speed Force and the possible introduction of the new big bad. A fun villain could give viewers some recovery time from storylines that are undoubtedly going to be pretty heavy in the first couple episodes of Season 4.
Barry Allen’s Return As The Flash May Tear The Team Apart
We’ll have to wait and see. The Flash will return for Season 4 on Tuesday, October 10 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
