Jurassic World 2 Officially Starts Filming

Colin Trevorrow’s Jurassic World is generally considered a return to form for the iconic franchise, managing to portray the what-if scenario of a dinosaur park actually opening and functioning, without overwriting the original Jurassic Park trilogy. It leaned heavily on the side of nostalgia and while some fans disliked its lack of originality, the film still grossed $1.67 billion worldwide. That sum would be enough for any studio to green-light a sequel, and true to form, reports quickly began to circulate about the exciting potential of Jurassic World 2.

Colin Trevorrow is still attached to the sequel as a script writer, and the influence of Jurassic Park director Steven Spielberg will continue to be apparent in Jurassic World 2. Bryce Dallas Howard played the heroine Claire in the first Jurassic World and she too is returning for the followup – having now confirmed that filming on director J.A. Bayona’s dino-sequel is officially underway.
Producer Frank Marshall previously revealed that production on the Jurassic World sequel is now underway, via an update through his official Twitter account. Howard has likewise taken to Twitter, in order to announce that cameras are rolling on the movie.
The text included with Howard’s tweet (“We have an asset out of containment. Put ACU on alert. This not a drill.”) is a line spoken by her character Claire in Jurassic World, following the escape of the Indominus Rex from its pen in the eponymous dino theme park. Of course, it’s also reasonable to assume that more “assets” will be “out of containment” in the sequel too, in one way or another.
Trevorrow has spoken about the Jurassic World sequel’s potential to move away from the park scenario, and many of the film’s story rumors have centred around one particular plot thread in Jurassic World – that involving Vincent D’Onofrio’s character, a sleazy military-minded member of Ingen. The possibility of more genetically modified dinosaurs being introduced and the increasing militarization of the park’s technology in the Jurassic World sequel, could take the series in a radically new direction.
Then again, it has been suggested in the past that Jurassic World 2 will be concentrating more firmly on animal rights, as opposed to the dangers of enhancing weaponry by way of dinosaurs. Jurassic World was perhaps most innovative in its psychological appraisal of the hybrid dinosaur that is the Indominus Rex, exposing the dangers of rearing animals in captivity. Whether or not that will be expanded upon in the sequel, remains to be seen.
