The Marvel Cinematic Universe has had nothing but constant success and warm receptions worldwide ever since Iron Man kicked it off in his first stand-alone movie. The members of the Avengers all had a huge part to play in the MCU’s current success since they are all well known in both the cartoon and comic world. The Guardians of the Galaxy (who weren’t as popular in those worlds), however, had a lot to prove in 2014 when the movie came out.
And it did surpass expectations to become a commercial and rousing success. So it was no surprise when a sequel for the adventures of Peter Quill and his merry band of misfits was announced.

The sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which is scheduled to hit the big screen on May 2 will surely have more success than the first movie… plus, we will get to see the Guardians of the Galaxy team up with the Avengers to battle Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War in 2018. But after that, will that be the end of the Guardian’s Franchise? According to James Gunn, no that wouldn’t be the end because there will be a third Guardians adventure. He stated:
There will be a Guardians 3, that’s for sure. We’re trying to figure it out. I’m trying to figure out what I want to do really, that’s all it is. I got to figure out where I want to be, what I want to spend the next three years of my life doing. You know, I’m going to make another big movie; is it the Guardians or something else? I’m just going to figure it out over the next couple of weeks.

But as he said, he’s still figuring out what he wants to do next with his career, and if he’s found that the cosmic side of the MCU isn’t as appealing as it once was, then it would make sense if he didn’t want to sit in the director’s chair again. If that ends up happening, maybe Gunn could at least stay attached to Guardians of the Galaxy 3 as a producer.
