Spiderman: The Evolution Of Your Friendly Neighbourhood Wall-Crawler in Live-Action Movies

Known as the godfather of superhero trilogy movies for being the first superhero movie to have a full three-part standalone movie run (we are not counting Wesley Snipe’s Blade because, well, Blade ain’t no Superhero), Spiderman is still one of the most successful superhero franchises till date… And why wouldn’t it, when fans had waited long enough to see the smart, witty and super agile wallcrawler transferred from the pages of comic books to the live-action big screen.

Spiderman first crawled its way into cinemas in 2002 with Spiderman directed by Sam Raimi. Although the movie was seriously criticised for the awkward Green Goblin costume, it was still hugely successful after grossing $821.7m worldwide. Spiderman 2 and 3 were released in 2004 and 2007 respectively with Sam Raimi once again directing and Tobey Maguire starring again as our friendly neighbourhood wall-crawler. Both movies went on to gross $783.8m and $890.9m  worldwide.

With fans asking for more Spiderman movies, Sony once again tried their run at the portrayal of the character with a reboot starring Andrew Garfield as The Amazing Spiderman that grossed $757.9m in 2012. The movie was well received and spurred Sony to sign off on a part two which saw Andrew Garfield taking on Jamie Foxx’s Electro and Green Goblin in The Amazing Spiderman 2. The movie went on to gross $709.0m.
Garfield was set to star in the third movie ofhis own trilogy, The Amazing Spiderman: Sinister Six, before Sony signed a deal with Marvel that would see them share the character 50/50 and would see him crawl his way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe to fight alongside the likes of The Avengers. This deal, however, didn’t include Andrew Garfield retaining his character as Marvel had other plans for the Spiderman character as a whole. Enter Tom Holland as the new Spiderman who made nothing short of an amazing debut in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War before finally going on to star in his own first standalone movie Spiderman: Homecoming which has grossed $480.3m and counting!!!
Spiderman: Homecoming is still showing in cinemas nationwide. So take a trip down to the nearest FilmHouse, Silverbird or Genesis Deluxe cinemas to watch Spiderman fight off the sinister villain Vulture.
